I made this as a gift for one of my daughter’s teachers. Just something to say thank you for being so good to my kid. I know she is really into Minnie so that is what I made her. She loved it! Yay!
I have long admired my good pal Derek Wong’s, of Twisted Inflations, Minnie Mouse that he posted a picture of on Facebook.
I just found it so stunning. I think one of his strengths as a balloon artist is that he can make small pieces have such huge and highly polished presences.
I decided to try to see if I could figure out how to make it just by looking at the picture. The simple touch he made of the white bubbles on the dress just really added so much magic in my opinion.
I made some modifications. For one thing my version has her sitting down instead of standing up. I also added a white bow under her chin and some eyelashes. My bow is different and is differently adjusted on her head. My arms are longer and I have her holding a flower and she has thinner legs. The way we do the hands are different and the size shoes are smaller on my version. I also have her on a larger bed of balloons as it were and I don’t know if my version is significantly bigger than his.
I really admire Derek and his designs and I am having fun seeing if I can figure out how people are making things. It feels cool to be able to look at pictures and figure out how to make them on my own. It helps in developing problem solving skills and balloon construction engineering, lol. It is also neat because it is like you are getting inside someone else’s head and you start to get a feel for how they think and how they go about constructing, which tutorials are great for as well. You will see patterns which I just find fascinating. I feel like it is a way of practicing what Emerson said, “Every man is my superior in at least one way, and in that way I learn of him.” I feel like my journey will be greater the more I walk in other people’s shoes.
Did you know that the Beatles were a cover band before they made their own music?
I think they gathered pearls from those they admired and then created their own necklace with them.
Derek is a really cool person and very encouraging and he gets that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. He has one of the healthiest egos I have seen in the balloon art community, or any art community I have been a part of and he is a great Balloon Hero of mine indeed and just a really cool human being. When he said he was proud of my replication that meant a lot to me. My greatest influences and heroes at this time are Derek Wong, Phileas Flash, Tatyana DjeTa Lyashko, Michael Gjerek, Irina Lobanova, Nifty Balloons, Dylan Gelinas, and Pip Milford Hughes and of course always Addi Somekh.
